As someone who is absolutely obsessed with good food and dining out, it’s safe to say that when visiting a new country and culture, amongst the top things to do on my list is eat! New foods, new tastes, as much local as possible, and truly get to experience the ‘flavors’ of a country. During my recent trip to Indonesia, we stumbled upon a whole lot of really great restaurants, bars, and lounges, maybe not all necessarily local cuisine, but all definitely worth mentioning, providing wonderful service, flavors, and most importantly (in my opinion) experiences!
Though some of these are definitely ‘guilty pleasures’ (when taking price into consideration, you’ll find this indicated with the ‘€’ signs) others just simply left a great impression both in regards to the experience and our wallets! So Whatever your price range may be, or your definition of ‘guilty pleasure’ I’m sure you can find some great options! Here are just some of my fave finds!
Seminyak, the trendy, relaxed and bustling beach town that it is, had some of the best restaurants and lounges!
This place was definitely a favorite during our trip, we came back here probably about three different times! The music was great with a live DJ on at all times, the staff was amazing, friendly and on point when it came to the service! The lounging possibilities were plenty, with options such as poolside beds, medium, and larger cabanas, indoor sofas and table seating, as well as the option to just chill at the bar. And of course, the food and drinks were delicious! A must visit when in town!
Chez Gado Gado €€€€
This great beachfront restaurant and lounge was definitely a splurge, but worth every penny! Service was great, we sat outside practically on the beach beneath some romantic ambient lighting while the waves crashed on shore in the background. The food was amazing, and I can without a shred of doubt say that I had the best Mahi-mahi ever! (as a seafood enthusiast I’ve had my fair share of mahi-mahi!) The combination of flavors with perfectly grilled veggies and fresh fish was amazing!
A rooftop restaurant and lounge, situated on top of the Anantara resort which included a stunning view, wonderful service, and delicious breakfast! A little on the pricier side, but with good reason! We had the option between a breakfast buffet or an a la carte selection of the chef’s special creations! We went for the a la carte option and were definitely not disappointed!
La Favela €€
Walking into La Favela you’re instantly surrounded with super cozy, ambient and chill vibes! This bar and restaurant include a very cool garden, where you can have your dinner and drinks surrounded by trees, a pond, a small bridge, all while surrounded by relaxed lighting. The service was great, the food delicious and here too we hung out more than once!
If you’re looking for tasty food accompanied by some live entertainment then Made’s warung is a great option. We were able to enjoy some delicious snacks and good drinks, all while being entertained, by beautiful performers doing the traditional Balinese dance! It was here that we got to see our favorite band for a second time, by total coincidence! Ika and the soul brothers, we fell in love with their energy a few weeks prior at the Laughing Buddha (see below) in Ubud and were beyond excited and surprised to see them again in Seminyak.
The Bistrot €€
A great place, with a unique and vintage vibe! Another gem with great service and delicious breakfast. We stumbled upon this cafe and restaurant our last morning in Bali and were pleasantly surprised by the cozy, unique and vintage interior, and even more so by the friendly staff and great food!
Shelter cafe €€
An incredibly popular spot, and with good reason! If you’re into fresh, delicious, organic, food then you cannot miss a visit to Shelter! Everything from amazing fresh juices, all sorts of special home made bread, turmeric shots, nalu bowls and mixing and matching your own breakfast, this place had it all. In a relaxed rooftop garden like environment, with a friendly staff, here too we could not resist a couple of visits! But, be forewarned, if you want a seat here you have to be super early or lucky, as they do not take reservations, and often have a very long waiting list.
Ubud, A very different vibe, up in the rice fields, between endless greenery with still tons of energy!
This organically inspired and wholefoods restaurant and cafe was a great find, a must visit, especially if you happen to be a ‘health nut’ like me! Fresh, organic cuisine, made with local ingredients and lots of flavors! And not to mention great service!
We had one of the best nights here! A trendy, relaxed, ambient, restaurant, bar and lounge! We happen to drive by and caught the sound of some really great live music! We walked in just in time to score a cozy lounge area before it got incredibly busy. This is the first time we saw Ika and the soul brothers! Their energy was amazing, the service was great and the drinks & snacks delicious. This was a complete experience!
Delicious food, drinks, and great service! Another gem we stumbled upon wandering around town. With a cozy and relaxed back terrace with all the ambiance you need!
Uluwatu, another great beach town and surfer’s paradise, though slightly more laid back than Seminyak, another favorite of the trip!
El Kabron cliff bar €€€€
We were so lucky during our trip when it came to restaurants and food! We kept stumbling into places that turned out to be absolutely amazing, and ‘El Kabron’ was definitely on top of the list! In need of a good view, chilling and sunset, we followed some signs along the side of the road which read “great sunset view, cliff bar”. We had no idea what to expect. We were shocked to find a super trendy, relaxed restaurant, poolside lounge, with balcony seating, an all in one cliff bar! We were able to get a great balcony table, last minute with no reservations, right before everything was sold out. The view was stunning and sunset breathtaking. Service was on point, a very friendly staff and Food and drinks were just amazing!
Blue Heaven €€€
After some serious beach lounging, drinking fresh coconut water, watching my guy surf, and making sure the monkeys didn’t steal our sh*t we made our way up the road to Blue Heaven for some lunch. Another fantastic restaurant and lounge! The service was great, and the view amazing! We spent the whole rest of the day lounging in the infinity pool overlooking Padang-Padang beach, and ended up staying for dinner, the perfect lounge day!
Bukit Cafe €€
A bohemian style restaurant with a relaxed vibe. The staff was nice and the food was great! A nice and casual dinner experience!
Gili Trawangan, though a busy and tiny party island, the southern part of the island had a calmer vibe and some great lounge spots!
Located on the more relaxed south side of this tiny island, Pearl beach lounge was the perfect escape from the all the noise and crowds. Right on the beach, white sand, blue water, snorkeling possibilities, great food, delicious drinks and good service. What else could you ask for!
Senggigi, a wonderful area, with some great eats!
Another place we could not resist visiting more than once! Square was a great, cozy and ambient restaurant, perfect for our Christmas dinner! The staff was very friendly and provided great service. The food was absolutely delicious, and we simply had to return, twice!
Verve Beach club €€€
In need of another day of major lounging, we decided to try out Verve beach club. We were not disappointed! A wonderful restaurant and club, right on the beach! A beautiful black sand beach where we got to enjoy an amazing sunset while hanging out with other travelers. We had the freshest and most delicious tuna tartare (the freshest tuna we had ever tasted, without a doubt!) and the drinks were great! Not to mention, a lovely staff.
A wonderful, casual and relaxed beachside bar and restaurant! We were able to enjoy some good drinks, good food, and a friendly staff while lounging on bean bag chairs in the sand. The perfect spot for some good vibes, and casual relaxation!
Kuta, a more modest and laid back part of the island, with stunning beaches and plenty of local restaurants!
A relaxed, modest, and family run bar and restaurant, with friendly staff and some great local food!
A month long of traveling adventure, and a month long of delicious food! Bali and Lombok were definitely a ‘Foodie’s paradise’!
Visited any other great restaurants on your trip to these islands? I would love to hear about them! Just leave a comment.
