Absolute Favorite Amsterdam Eats

“People who love to eat, are always the best people”. – Julia Child

I wholeheartedly believe that food is one of life’s greatest pleasures. Everything from breakfast, brunch, lunch, dinner and snacks. Great food with great people is amongst the things I enjoy the most in my spare time. Always on the lookout for the next new dining experience, and always ready for new, interesting and unique flavors, I just can’t seem to get enough!

Living in Amsterdam, It’s no secret that there is an incredible saturation of everything from lunchrooms, cafes, restaurants, coffee houses, waterfront bars and lounges. And while I can assure you that I am nowhere near experiencing them all (though I can also assure you that it is a mission in progress) I have, however, come to find my absolute favorites along the way thus far.

Keeping in mind my usual criteria: great food (obviously) wonderful service and overall experience, here are just some of my ‘absolute favorite Amsterdam eats’! (in no particular order)

Orbit – Restaurant & Lounge €€€

One of my absolute favorites, this one has yet to disappoint! A modern Asian cuisine, with everything from delicious bites and finger foods, to absolutely amazing meals, put together with an array of unique flavors. With its name derived from ‘Oriental Bite’, Orbit always (as much as I try to test out new places, I can’t help but keep coming back!) provides a modern and cozy ‘lounge’ vibe with an incredibly friendly staff!

De Ysbreker – Café & Restaurant €€

With a terras located along the Amstel river, this one is definitely e neighborhood favorite! Whether it’s breakfast, lunch or dinner, De Ysbreker is my go to place for great food and great service. With a cozy interior for those rainy Amsterdam days and a great terras for those sunny warmer afternoons, always a wonderful option!

De Plantage – Café & Restaurant €€€

Having recently been introduced to this one, I can’t seem to get over it! Located next to the Artis zoo, in a beautiful area of the city, surrounded by leafy boulevards, overlooking a wonderful garden while the spoonbills frolic around. The food was absolutely amazing, everything from the entree to dessert and wine, I could not find a single fault. The staff was incredibly friendly and despite a last minute reservation on a Saturday night, we were able to score a great table before the place got packed!

Waterkant – Waterfront Café & Restaurant €€

Considered one of Amsterdam’s many hot spots in the summer, and for good reason! With a tropical vibe, located in the city along the Singel canal, the perfect place to chill, eat and even dance! During the day they offer delicious lunch and in the evening amazing dinners, all inspired by Surinamese flavors! And if you’re looking for some great cocktails with some after-hours dancing, then sticking around after dinner is a must! The place turns from restaurant to dance floor, with great music and a fun staff!

Lucius – Seafood Restaurant €€€

Another favorite I can’t seem to get enough of! As an island girl absolutely obsessed with seafood, this place is a dream! With everything from the freshest fish and shellfish to the highest quality of unique ingredients, I have yet to be disappointed! And with an absolutely wonderful and friendly staff added to the mix, I can’t help but keep coming back!

Sir Hummus – Artisan shop & Deli €

Another newly found Gem, I absolutely fell in love! Inspired by the ‘real’ hummus experience from the streets of Jerusalem, Sir hummus brings freshly made, fluffy, hummus to all its clients! Served as a main dish with your choice of fresh, delicious toppings, and fresh pita, this was a hummus lover’s fantasy! A quaint little shop in de pijp, with a friendly staff!

The Seafood Bar – Restaurant & Traiteur €€€

You guessed it, another seafood dream! With a relaxed vibe, the seafood bar offers an array of delicious, fresh seafood options, wonderful wines, and great staff.

With quality products and flavors, without a doubt another all time favorite.

Gs | Really nice place – Brunch & Drinks €€

If you happen to be absolutely obsessed with brunch, like I am, then Gs is an absolute dream! Between its very cool and eclectic interior, amazing brunch options (everything from fried chicken and waffles to countless heavenly and unique egg creations), delicious mimosas, ‘manmosas’, cocktails and great staff, I just can’t get over it!

Riva – Café & Restaurant €€€

Another summer favorite, Riva offers a sunny terrace right on the Amstel river. The perfect relaxed summer spot, spending hours on the water watching boats passing by, delicious international cuisine, great wine, and a wonderful staff!

Urban Cacao – Patisserie & Chocolaterie €€

Though not a restaurant or café, this sweet sensation is definitely worth a visit (or 5). Urban cacao, nestled in the heart of the city, offers absolutely amazing, hand made, fair trade chocolates of every flavor, texture, and combination you can imagine! With a great cup of coffee, sweet staff and amazing, fresh, hand made macaroon, you’ll definitely keep coming back for more!

Bakers & Roasters – Brunch €€

Another absolute brunch favorite, Bakers & Roasters seems to always draw a crowd of brunch enthusiasts, and for good reason! With dreamy, fluffy pancakes, and delicious combinations of flavors, textures, options and a friendly staff, definitely, a must visit!

Kantjil & de Tijger – Restaurant €€

A long time lunch favorite, Kantjil & de Tijger located in the heart of the city, offers a new Asian brasserie during the day and extensive ‘rijsttafel’ during the evenings. With fresh homemade ingredients, unique combinations of Indonesian flavors, a terras for some sunshine and people watching, cozy indoor seating and nice staff, definitely another go-to place!

De Duvel – Café & Restaurant

Another neighborhood favorite, located in the heart of ‘de pijp’. The perfect spot for casual, laid back drinks, great lunch, and delicious dinner. Making use of local and biological ingredients, maintaining an international inspiration of flavors, and a nice staff, this one has yet to disappoint!

Though the amazing places I have found go way beyond this list (trying to keep this list ‘short’ was a challenge, one I didn’t quite overcome) as I continue to taste and explore this city, I can’t wait to see which favorites I’ll find next!

Love & Light,
